FAQs
Q: How long have you been doing pottery?
A: I started in 2002 while studying at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. Since then I have worked in studios in Melbourne (Australia), Shimane (Japan) and now Manhattan (New York).
Q: What is your signature?
A: The signature I use is the Japanese character for wind. "Hugh" has the same sound as the word (onomatopoeia) used for wind.
Q: Where can I see your work?
A: If you are in New York, please contact me to arrange a private viewing. Otherwise you can see my latest work in my shop or you can follow my instagram.
Q: How long does it take to make a piece?
A: Preparing the clay, forming the shape on the wheel, slowly drying the piece, trimming and first bisque firing takes about 1 month. The final firing in the wood kiln only happens 3-4 times a year and that process takes 2-3 weeks.
Q: Where is your studio?
A: I rent studio space in Manhattan, New York. I am working towards having my own private studio on a few acres.. That's my dream but living in NYC makes it very difficult.
Q: Can you make more of the sold out items?
A: Each piece is one of a kind, especially the woodfired pieces. It is near impossible to duplicate the results achieved in a woodfired kiln. However, I will try to remake popular forms although the glaze and texture will be unique.
